Japanese Studies Program Japanese Studies Program

Minor Requirements

A minor in Japanese studies consists of at least twelve units of Japanese language (lower or upper division) and at least sixteen units of upper-division nonlanguage course work taken from two or more departments. Students may use nonlanguage courses taken abroad. All courses to be used for the minor must be approved by the Program in Japanese Studies and must be taken for a letter grade. Students who declare for the Japanese studies major and minor will be allowed no more than one course with a D grade to count toward the program requirement. This new requirement will not apply to students who declared their major or minor prior to fall 2010. As a rule for all scenarios, all courses must be taken for a letter grade to earn a minor in Japanese studies.

Requirements:

  • At least 12 units of Japanese language courses
  • At least 16 units of non-language courses from two or more departments
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade; only 1 course with a D grade may count towards program requirements.
  • If you test out of the upper division Japanese language courses, you may substitute them with upper division non-language courses.

Note: UD Non-language courses must be selected from our Course Offerings. Check the website every quarter to find out which eligible courses are available.

How to declare a minor in Japanese Studies

  1. Go to TritonLink's Minor Tool.
  2. Enter 3 JAPN courses and 4 UD non-language courses in the Minor Course List. If you're not sure which UD non-language courses you'll take in the future, you can simply enter "TBD UD Non-Lang." in the boxes. As long as 3 JAPN courses and 4 UD non-language courses are listed (including the TBD ones), your minor request will be approved by us, and you can decide which UD non-language courses to take as you go. (See sample minor course list)
  3. Submit your minor request.

Note: Japanese Studies will allow our majors and minors to take their SP20, SU20, FA20, WI21, SP21, and WI22 courses for P/NP per the campus recommendation.

  • P/NP courses will be counted towards the 25% maximum
  • Students must earn at least a C- grade to earn a P; a change from a D grade to NP will result in loss of units
  • Financial aid packages will be affected by NP grades
