Welcome to UCSD and the Japanese Studies Program! If you are new student or are considering transfering to UCSD please make an appointment with the program advsior to discuss how your Junior College courses can transfer into the major. ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST Step 1: Print your Japanese Studies 2-year plan here. Take a look at the major requirements:
Step 2: Check on ASSIST www.assist.org, the official source for California articulation and student transfer information. You will find out how your lower division courses transfer. If a course transfers from your community college to UCSD, it does not mean that it is equivalent unless it appears on assist.org. If you took a Japanese Studies course that does not appear on assist.org and you think it is equivalent, you must file an undergraduate student petition along with syllabi, papers, and exams with the Japanese Studies Program. Step 3: Schedule a Japanese Language Placement Exam with the major advisor to determine your language level. Please note that many transfer students begin their language studies with 2nd Year Japanese, which is a lower-division sequence (JAPN 20 A-B-C). If this is the case, students are encouraged to study abroad after their first year at UCSD, or they are required to stay at UCSD for three years to complete one extra year of upper-division language. Step 4: Review the Schedule of Classes on TritonLink and the approved course list to determine which courses will be offered for your first quarter at UCSD. Step 5: Contact your college with your proposed schedule. Then enroll in classes during your enrollment time. Step 6: Make an appointment with the Student Affairs Advisor any time during the quarter to go over your 2-year plan and to understand the major requirements. Back to the topQuestions?
