Major

Lower Division Requirement

1. Japanese language: 2 years lower division or the transferred equivalent:

JAPN 10 A-B-C (First Year Japanese)
JAPN 20 A-B-C (Second Year Japanese)

2. The remaining 3 courses must be chosen from among the following:

HILD 10-11-12: East Asian History
ERC students may petition MMW courses 2 and 5
Marshall students may petition DOC course 1

3. The language requirement may be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through a placement exam. Please see "Language Exam" secion on this page for more detail.


Upper Division Requirement

1. Japanese language: 6 upper division language courses or the transferred equivalent from:

JAPN 100 A-B-C (Japanese for Bilingual Speakers)
JAPN 130 A-B-C (Third Year Japanese)
JAPN 140 A-B-C (Fourth Year Japanese)
JAPN 150 A-B-C (Fifth Year Japanese)

Students may petition to include up to three upper-divison language courses taken abroad under EAP or OAP. Please see "Study Abroad" for more detail.

2. JAPN 190: Contemporary Issues in Japanese Studies: This is a seminar course focusing on selected topics in contemporary interdisciplinary studies of Japan. This course will be offered once or twice a year.

3. The remaining 5 courses must be taken from two or more different disciplines.

Students may petition to include up to two non-language upper division courses taken abroad under EAP or OAP. Please see "Study Abroad" for more detail.
Students may include one 199 Independent Studies course.

4. All courses must be taken for a letter grade with the exception of 199.

5. The language requirement can be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through a placement exam. The required number of courses must be fulfilled by taking other non-language upper-division courses.

Minor

A minor in Japanese Studies consists of at least 15 units of Japanese language (lower or upper division) and at least 16 units of upper division non-language coursework taken from two or more departments.

Students who are placed in lower division Japanese language course(JAPN 10 A-B-C, or JAPN 20 A-B-C) are required to take three lower divison language courses and four upper division non-languae courses.

Students who are already beyond first- and second- year language levels will be placed in one of our upper division Japanese language courses, JAPN 100 A-B-C (Japanese for Bilingual Speakers), JAPN 130 A-B-C, JAPN 140 A-B-C, or JAPN 150 A-B-C, and are required to take four upper division language courses and three upper division non- language courses.

The language requirement can be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through a placement exam. The required number of courses must be fulfilled by taking other non-language upper-division courses.

Students may use one non-language course taken abroad. All courses to be used for the minor must be approved by the Japanese Studies Program and must be taken for a letter grade. Please see "Study Abroad" for more detail.

Japanese Langauge Exams

Japanese Placement Exam

The Simple Proficiency-Oriented Test (SPOT) or Japanese Placement Exam is for students who have taken Japanese language at a community college, in high school, or who have background or knowledge in Japanese. The exam consists of two parts: the listening exam and consultation with lecturers after the exam. The listening exam is 15 minutes long,

The format of the litening exam is to listen to an exam CD and fill in the corresponding blanks ( ) with a hiragana symbol. There are 10 practice questions followed by 120 exam questions.

WHEN:
Every Monday and Wednesday at 3pm or by appointment. Please make an appointment with the program coordinator prior to taking the exam.

WHERE:
Please come to HSS 3024 first after which students will be taken to a conference room for exam administration.

WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring a pen or pencil.


PROCESS

Step 1: Email japan@ucsd.edu or call (858) 534-3598 to make an appointment with the program coordinator.

Step 2: Please arrive at HSS 3024 at the appointed time. You will be taken to an available conference room for exam administration

Step 3: After completion of exam, please bring your exam back to HSS 3024. Please do NOT take the exam home with you.

Step 4: Results will be available in approximately 3 days after completion of the exam and one of our lecturers will contact you for a consultation to ask more details regarding your knowledge and education. Some students are requested to meet lecturers in person.

Step 5: The lecturer will notify the program coordinator with a final result and the program coordinator will preauthorize students for an appropriate course. Students will be notified of the results via email.

 

EXCEPTIONS:

1) Students whose courses from community college are transferable to UCSD may not need to take the placement exam. Check ASSIST to find out how your California college courses can be applied to the Japanese Language Program. If your courses are not listed, please take a placement exam. Please see "Transfer Students" for more detail.

2) Students who are bilingual may not need to take a placement exam. Please write your self introduction including your background and education in Japanese (students who cannot type in Japanese characters can use romaji) and attach it as Word Format and email it to japan@ucsd.edu. Once you are determined to be exempt from the exam, the program coordinator will refer you to the appropriate lecturer for further consultation.


Japanese Proficiency Exam

Proficiency Exams are given to UCSD students who are required to demonstrate Japanese language proficiency for their college or major language requirement. The exam is given to students who place out of JAPN 20A on the Japanese Placement Exam. Arrangements for proficiency evaluation are made after placement exam results are confirmed. Bilingual students may not need to take a placement exam.

Independent Research and Honors

Requirements

JAPN 199 (Independent Research)

1. A student must have completed at least 90.0 units at UCSD and must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or better

2. Recommendation of a faculty sponsor familiar with the student's work.

 

JAPN 196A-B (Honors Program)

1. A student must have Junior Standing or higher

2. A student must have a major GPA of 3.5 or better

3. A student must have overall GPA of 3.2 or better

4. A student must have completed 90 units at UCSD and at least four upper division non-language courses approved by the Japanese Studies Program.

5. Recommendation of a faculty sponsor familiar with the student's work.

6. Honors Program Applications are due during the summer. Please complete the form and bring it to the Japnese Studies Office (HSS 3024).

Honors Program Application

Students who qualify for honors take a two quarter sequence JAPN 196 A-B (Fall & Winter Quarters) of directed study during which they define a research project, carry out the research, and complete an honors thesis. The completed honors thesis will be evaluated by a committe consisting of the student's thesis adviser and one other faculty member appointed by the Japanese Studies Program director.

How to Register

1. Select a faculty member with whom you plan to do research. It is generally advised you seek a professor with whom you have taken courses.

Before Meeting with a professor, have a general idea of what topic or issue you would like to research. Many times, students expand on previous papers/assignments.

2. Contact the faculty member, and provide them with proof of meeting the GPA and unit requirements for 196A-B. or 199.

3. Once your placement is confirmed, complete Special Studies Form, course plan and reading list.

The course plan is a written statement or outline that highlights how the research will be conducted. This will also include list of book titles that will be read during the quarter for your research.

4. Return the Special Studies Form to the Japanese Studies Office (HSS3024) for final approval. Applications are due on the 8th week of the quarter prior to which you will be conducting your 196/199 research commitment. The Department Chair will make the approval decision within 7-10 working days from the receipt of the form.

5. Special Studies Forms must be delivered to the Registrar's Office to secure your enrollment.
