Major

Lower Division Requirement

1. Japanese language: 2 years lower division or the transferred equivalent:

JAPN 10 A-B-C (First Year Japanese)
JAPN 20 A-B-C (Second Year Japanese)

2. The remaining 3 courses must be chosen from among the following:

HILD 10-11-12: East Asian History
ERC students may petition MMW courses 2 and 5
Marshall students may petition DOC course 1

3. The language requirement may be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through exam. Please see the Japanese Studies Department for more information.


Upper Division Requirement

1. Japanese language: 6 upper division language courses or the transferred equivalent from:

JAPN 100 A-B-C (Japanese for Bilingual Speakers)
JAPN 130 A-B-C (Third Year Japanese)
JAPN 140 A-B-C (Fourth Year Japanese)
JAPN 150 A-B-C (Fifth Year Japanese)

2. JAPN 190: Contemporary Issues in Japanese Studies: This is a seminar course focusing on selected topics in contemporary interdisciplinary studies of Japan. This course will be offered once a year.

3. The remaining 5 courses must be taken from two or more different disciplines.

Students may petition to include two non-language upper division courses taken abroad under EAP or OAP.
Students may include one 199 Independent Studies course.

4. All courses must be taken for a letter grade with the exception of 199.

5. The language requirement can be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through exam. The required number of courses must be fulfilled by taking other non-language upper-division courses.

Minor

A minor in Japanese Studies consists of at least 15 units of Japanese language (lower or upper division) and at least 16 units of upper division non-language coursework taken from two or more departments. Students may use one non-language course taken abroad. All courses to be used for the minor must be approved by the Japanese Studies Program and must be taken for a letter grade.

Students who are already beyond first- and second- year language levels will be placed in one of our upper division Japanese language courses, JAPN 100 A-B-C (Japanese for Bilingual Speakers), JAPN 130 A-B-C, JAPN 140 A-B-C, or JAPN 150 A-B-C, and are required to take four upper division language courses and three upper division non- language courses.

The language requirement can be waived by demonstrating the equivalent proficiency through exam. The required number of courses must be fulfilled by taking other non-language upper-division courses.

Japanese Langauge Exams

Japanese Placement Exam

The Simple Proficiency-Oriented Test (SPOT) or Japanese Placement Exam is for students who have taken Japanese language at a community college, in high school, or who are bilingual speakers. The exam is 15 minutes long, and scheduled on MW at 3PM.

Students whose courses transfer to UCSD may not need to take the placement exam. Check ASSIST to find out how your California college courses can be applied to the Japanese Language Program.

Japanese Proficiency Exam

Proficiency Exams are given to UCSD students who are required to demonstrate Japanese language proficiency for their college or major language requirement. The exam is given to students who place out of JAPN 20A on the Japanese Placement Exam. Arrangements for proficiency evaluation are made after placement exam results are confirmed.

Honors

1. Junior Standing or higher

2. A Major GPA of 3.5 or better

3. Overall GPA of 3.2 or better

4. Completion of at least four upper division non-language courses approved by the Japanese Studies Program.

5. Recommendation of a faculty sponsor famliar with the student's work.

6. Applications are due during the summer.

Students who qualify for honors take a two quarter sequence JAPN 196 A-B (Fall & Winter Quarters) of directed study during which they define a research project, carry out the research, and complete an honors thesis. The completed honors thesis will be evaluated by a committe consisting of the student's thesis adviser and one other faculty member appointed by the Japanese Studies Program director.
